If you haven’t given it a shot yet, do so immediately! So while I can’t really recommend double-dipping for everyone with Shovel Knight, the game is still fantastic and as fun to play as ever. Sure I could drag my PC out to the living room and hook it up to the big screen, but that user experience is pretty bad (Thanks Windows). Games like Towerfall or Nidhogg work well on PC, but shine on console because of the physical proximity of the combatants. It would have been nice if they introduced a mode that took advantage of that. Increasingly the only differentiator between PCs and consoles is that consoles are more inherently suited to couch vs. If I’m playing in my office, or if I’m in the living room, the main difference being atmosphere at this point. Yacht Club Games did a great job of keeping the retro look on a high def tv, and the console controls are just as good on a console as they were on PC.įor me, the real thing that Shovel Knight on PS4 showed was that the gap between PC and Console gaming is truly shrinking. Ported games fall into one of two categories, either are as good as the original iteration and unremarkable, or they are worse and immediately are derided as shovelware (pun intended).Įven with the added boss content (God of War’s Kratos on the PS4 and the Battletoads on the Xbox One) there isn’t much more game than was there originally but that’s to be expected. That being said, Shovel Knight illustrates the problem with any port, no matter how good. With it moving to the major consoles there is no excuse not to play it.
If you haven’t played what is easily one of the best games of last year you should stop reading right now and go download it. The PS4 port of Shovel Knight maintains the high standard of the original, which is to say that it is fantastic.
