Gargoyles are typically found on the exterior of gothic churches. They are usually made out of limestone or iron, but sometimes they are made out of bronze or copper. Gargoyles were originally designed to protect the entrance of churches and other buildings from evil forces. Gargoyles were often designed with open mouths to appear as though they were spitting water.
When rain falls on a church roof, it slides off, and medieval architects designed churches so water would slide off the gargoyles on the side. They are usually found at the top of the spire of a Gothic church.Ĭhurches have gargoyles for drainage purposes.
